Vanderbilt Estate is located on a bluff on the east side of the Hudson River. This historic gilded age house is a beautiful backdrop for a relatively easy hike.
The hike, or walk, is 2.5 miles roundtrip. If you start out heading north, you walk along the buff with gorgeous views of the hudson river before starting down hill, on a paved road.
Once at the bottom of the hill you can go straight a little further, cross over a bridge to Bard Rock or turn left and follow the tree lined path.
The path appears to be an old carriage road. It follows along the Hudson River, with the train tracks in between. For part of the walk it’s just you, the river, the tracks, remnants of an old iron fence and then the mansion comes back into sight. The remaining part of the walk is pretty much the same.
Once you walk back up the hill you are greeted with a small “waterfall” and some beautiful scenery along the stream.
The formal Italian gardens are up a hill to the left from the bridge. The gardens are beautiful and moody in the winter, it must be amazing in the summer!
